Sinclair Ferguson in his lecture, “The Reformed Doctrine of Sonship,” helpfully points out that any soteriological model which sets itself up as useful has to stand a series of tests:
- Is it a biblical model?
- Is it a covenantal model?
- Is it a redemptive-historical model?
- Is it an eschatological model?
- Is it a Christo-centric model?
The full lecture focuses on the neglected topic of sonship and adoption and is well worth listening to here.
(Edit: Nick Batzig has helpfully pointed out a text version here of the audio lecture I’ve linked to. Thanks, Nick!)
